I created the MOUNTAINS series of acrylic paintings in December 2023, when I was 94 years old. Unlike some of my other recent series of paintings, the current series was meant to show the natural beauty of our world (as contrasted with the ugliness caused by people through their violent behavior). The image of mountains has always reminded me of the hikes I took with my father in my childhood on Mount Carmel in my native city of Haifa, Israel, and later on the Swiss Alps. I used the ancient art of stenciling to create this series.

More Mountains
Mountains have always been dear to my heart, not only because Mount Carmel played an important role in my youth in Haifa, Israel, but also because I spent many hours exploring mountains later on, while on vacation in Switzerland with my dear father, Dr. Abraham Weinshall. In this series I used the ancient art of stenciling and employed a limited palette of bright colors to express the majesty of mountains.

Mountains in Black and White
Using the ancient art of stenciling, I employed a palette of bright colors for the background but only black and white for the mountains. I added the image of the sun/moon to complete the painting.

Black Mountains
I painted the BLACK MOUNTAINS series of acrylic paintings in early 2024, when I was 94 years old, using the ancient art of stenciling. The painting echoes my memories of the dark days of World War II, when Mt. Carmel and the rest of the city of Haifa had to be kept dark because of the danger of being detected by enemy bombers. We spent many hours during the war in our dark bomb shelter.

Mountains Through Window
I painted the MOUNTAIN THRU WINDOW series of acrylic paintings in early 2024, when I was 94 years old. I created the window by using masking tape, and used a stencil of a mountain to complete the image. In my youth, I spent many hours looking out the window of our home in Haifa, Israel, and viewing Mount Carmel. Mountains have represented a challenge to me since my early days in the Scouts, when we were required to climb Mt. Carmel on Saturday, our day off school.

I painted MOUNTAIN THRU ARCHED WINDOW series of acrylic paintings in early 2024, when I was 94 years old. In this paiting I used three different stencils: One for the window, one for the wall, and one for the mountain visible thru the window. I found using three different stencils in one painting to be quite challenging.

Snowy Mountains Through Window
I painted the MOUNTAINS THRU WINDOW series of acrylic paintings in early 2024, when I was 94 years old. I had run out of the type of small canvases I had been using recently, which were 6”x6”, and since I was eager to paint, I decided to use the canvases I had on hand, which were 12”x6”. I delighted in creating the window by using various widths of masking tape horizontally and vertically, and then using a stencil for the mountains. I used a different primary or secondary color for each window, white for the mountains, and black for the background. Although I delight in creating color gradation, I felt that the complex framework of the window required a simple treatment of the mountains.
