While contemplating the possibilities offered by a stencil of irregular, more or less parallel, lines, it occurred to me that I could use the stencil as a basis for some abstract paintings suggesting a crowd of people in a confined area. I proceeded to carry out my idea by adhering bits of masking tape of various lengths perpendicularly to the background lines. I decided to try out my idea first in black-and-white before proceeding to color, and the present series was the result.
